Performance and Fatigue in Baseball Pitchers using the IntelliSkin Compression Shirt

Authors: James R. Andrews, MD Medical Director;
Elizabeth Russell, PhD Biomechanics Research Associate
American Medical Athletic Association | Dr. James Andrews of the Andrews Institute Conclusion: Athletes who want to optimize their performance should focus on their posture. Renowned Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. James Andrews showed the IntelliSkin shirt improved the performance of baseball pitchers while helping to protect them from injury. As a result, most Major League Baseball teams now buy IntelliSkin for their players.

Can the IntelliSkin Shirt Decrease Injury Rates in Intercollegiate Overhead Athletes?

Authors: Michael F. Shepard, MD1; Brent R. Davis, MD2; Benjamin D. Rubin, MD1
Orthopaedic Specialty Institute, Orange, CA | Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Irvine, CA
Conclusion: Use of an IntelliSkin shirt resulted in decreased days lost to the disabled list over two seasons in NCAA Volleyball Players at the same institution. Use of the IntelliSkin shirt demonstrated an improvement in the athletes’ scapular positioning during both seasons. In the 3rd and 4th years of wearing IntelliSkin shirts, the University of California, Irvine Men’s team won back-to-back NCAA Division 1 National Championships, which was the 1st time that had been accomplished in 17 years.

Perceived Influence of a Compression, Posture-Cueing Shirt on Cyclists Ride Experience and Post-Ride Recovery

Authors: Daniel J. Cipriani, PhD; Tiffany S. Yu, DPT; Olia Lyssanova, MS
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that IntelliSkin is a useful ergogenic aid to a cyclist’s training regimen. The IntelliSkin shirt was rated to have a perceived benefit by experienced cyclists for riding posture, post-ride posture, spine discomfort, and post-ride recovery.

Influence of Posture-Cueing Garment on Lower Extremity Kinematics During Normal Walking

Authors: Guiang NR, SPT; Lee JYC, SPT; Washburn AC, SPT; Kozuki MM, PT, OCS, CSCS; Cipriani D, PT, PhD
Department of Physical Therapy, Chapman University
Conclusion: The ReActivator Shorts decreased asymmetry in step length for individuals with lumbopelvic and/or hip related pathology. The observed step length difference in these individuals was neutralized when wearing the shorts. The study showed that the ReActivator Shorts posture-cueing straps corrected asymmetry in the body, which could contribute to symptoms.

Rehabilitation of Acromioclavicular Joint Separations: Operative/Nonoperative Considerations

Authors: Mark P. Cote, PT, DPTa; Karen E. Wojcik, MSPT, ATCb; Gregg Gomlinski, MSPT, CSCSb; Augustus D. Mazzocca, MS, MDa
Conclusion: Several bracing options for facilitating scapular retraction have been advocated. Strapless posture apparel is also ideal for encouraging scapular retraction. The IntelliSkin shirts use the same concepts as postural taping to promote optimal posture and scapular positioning.

"Body posture and individual joint centration is a critical aspect of high performance. Without it, performance suffers and we invite injury. IntelliSkin provides us with a great tool to assist us in reinforcing better posture, particularly considering the negative postural stressors our athletes experience outside of the training environment (e.g. long-haul flights, computer work, extensive/repetitive paddling on a surfboard). I am particularly pleased with how these garments can increase awareness of scapular positioning and thoracic curvature; two critical aspects to better shoulder health. Importantly, these are not corrective garments, but they facilitate the athlete in correcting faults. In my view, this promotes a chronic correction, rather than an acute correction, allowing for better outcomes in the short and long term."
