Dr. Tim Brown featured in Dynamic Chiropractic: Create a 24/7 Bubble of Health and Function

Friday, January 6th, 2012

No matter how well we’ve mastered our skills as chiropractors and no matter what techniques we use in our practice, our patients’ patterned postural habits between office visits can dictate the level of success of our treatment plans.

One of my main motivations to become a chiropractor was my experience as an often-injured athlete. Innately, I was never satisfied with the symptom-oriented treatment the traditional medical model offered. I felt that given the right guidance, I could be doing things outside of the treatment and training room that would help my body heal faster and perhaps more effectively prevent future injury.

Sitting is Killing You
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

This is the truth…Death By Chair is real. Its a simple formula…The more you sit the sooner you die. Sitting crushes and slows your metabolism, stimulating your body’s fight or flight system which decreases organ function and immunity while increasing your heart rate and blood pressure! Life is movement and movement is life. This year sit less…consider using a stand up desk and remember to focus on posture and keeping your spine aligned while you move and change positions often!

Why Good Posture is the Secret to Staying Younger

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Have you ever noticed how great a child’s posture is? Always standing straight, it’s beautiful to look at. Then, as we turn into adults, we start to slouch, and at about the same time, lower back pain kicks in. Coincidence? Nope. Posture is one of the most important things we can do for our body, especially when we spend countless hours on our feet, in front of a computer, and holding our kiddos. Breezy Mama talks with Dr. Tim Brown, sports medicine expert and creator of IntelliSkin, which just released the first-ever sports posture bra (Empower PostureCue Sports Bra) on why standing tall is important (one hint–it slows down your aging process) and what we can do to keep our body aligned and healthy, including exercises you can do at work (which won’t embarrass you in front of your coworkers).

Building The Baseball Athlete

Tuesday, July 6th, 2011

The posterior chain is a group of muscles, tendons and ligaments on the posterior kinetic chain of the body. Examples of these muscles include the biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, erector spinae muscle group, trapezius, posterior deltoids, etc.  What makes these important to baseball?

Imagine if you had a second set of posterior muscles at the shoulder.  Imagine these muscles- when added- assisted in maintaining a correct posture and also enabled (1) improved scapula retraction and depression, and (2) didn’t restrict extension yet (3) assisted the deceleration post release?  Would this reduce injury?  It could.  Would it assist in velocity improvements?  It could.

How To Surf For Life

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Eleven different experts offer advice on how to stay waterlogged forever by Dr. Tim Brown.

I drank the surf Kool-aid early on in my life. I can think of few things that would be as personally upsetting as failing to maintain the mobility, stability, endurance and strength it takes to ride waves.

It’s been a goal of mine to surf for life since I was a teenager, and with this theme in mind, I reached out to some special friends I’ve met along the way and asked them for their brief perspective on the topic and to share a few tips that have kept them in the water.

From the sage words of wisdom from Gerry Lopez to a medical doctor who specializes in sports medicine specific to watersports, I wanted to see perspectives on this topic.

Everyone’s experience is unique and I believe we can each find a few pearls of wisdom below to add to our plan that might just help us keep our bodies and minds fresh and remain stoked for as long we choose. Because the whole idea is to stop doing things we love when WE choose to…not when our body says “no more!” Enjoy a sampling of some real world experience we can all benefit from. And stay wet –Tim Brown

Shoulders

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Advice on how to keep shoulders flexible, strong and injury-free by Dr. Tim Brown.

One thing is for certain when it comes to surfing: everyone gets slammed once in a while. We can all relate to getting hung up at the top and going over the falls, or flying off our board like Supermen after clipping a little wrinkle on the face of a wave, or getting hammered by the lip and hitting the water so fast and hard you have no time to adjust your body for a safe landing.

Unfortunately, one of the most susceptible areas to injury during a fall is the shoulder, and according to many recent studies, shoulder issues are becoming a growing concern.

The objective of this feature is to take you through a little schooling with regards to shoulder function — and along the way, help you to better understand the principles which will allow your shoulders function at their best. The bonus is, the same things that make your upper extremities strong and functional with regards to paddling power and endurance, are the very same things that not only prevent injury to the shoulder, but to the middle/upper spine and neck as well.

Nutrition

Advice on the best fuel for surfing by Dr. Tim Brown and Dr. Doug Anderson.

Sports nutrition for surfers is about fuel, recovery and rebuilding. While our individual demands may vary somewhat relative to genetics and our personal health and fitness objectives. There are some general guidelines we can all follow.

Why should we care about what we eat as long as we’re not hungry? Because research is proving what we probably always knew anyway. You are what you eat — literally! The food choices you make that create your energy, your ability to maintain it while surfing, recover from an intense session or full day in the water so you can charge even harder the next time, over time becomes crucial.

Travel Safe

Advice on how to stay healthy while on the saltwatery road by Dr. Tim Brown.

I’m often asked by friends about the best and most important products to have on a surf trip in case one’s health takes a turn for the worst while traveling. You can (and probably should) purchase travel insurance that has an emergency evacuation plan — Medivac can cost $25K — and 24/7 care attached, which may be a great idea when traveling the Third World circuit.

But for the most part, there are many simple items you can pack with you that can save you much pain and hassle when your stomach starts to punish you because you were starving and ate that street vendor’s freaky little hors d’oeuvres that was not properly cooked, peeled or boiled.

Advice on surf specific strength training by Dr. Tim Brown.

Strength training methods for athletes is a subject that, unless you keep up on the latest peer reviewed research literature and data, can be very controversial.

But having access to the latest in sports science research — and by having the benefit of working with many doctors, trainers, researchers and certified strength and conditioning specialists who treat and train some of the world’s best athletes — I believe the pathway to greater strength and performance can be accessed through building a program that stresses, first and foremost, a stable and balanced foundation.

Loosen Up

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Advice on how to stay flexible during surfing by Dr. Tim Brown.

Why is flexibility so important for surfing? Because stretching trains the muscles to perform at their normal, full length and allows your joints to move at full range of motion. When joints move freely, you actually use less energy to surf because you move with efficiency and fluidity — which translates directly to less stress on the joints most commonly injured in surfing.

Also, having flexibility in your muscles improves what is known as the “physiological pump” — where your muscles perform as a secondary heart, fully lengthening then contracting.

Stayin’ Alive

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Advice on how to increase endurance for surfing by Dr. Tim Brown.

Endurance for a surfer can mean different things depending on your goals – longer sessions, or shorter, more explosive sessions, more waves, greater focus and concentration, fewer errors, fewer injuries, more confidence in big water, less muscle soreness, quicker recovery and safety.

Building your endurance for surfing differs greatly, for example, from building endurance for a marathon runner.

Depending on your personal surfing goals and objectives, there are a couple of different philosophies that will work well.

Broke Neck Blues

Tuesday, March 29nd, 2011

Dr. Tim Brown gives tips to get back in the water after a neck injury.

Dear Dr. Brown,

I broke my neck surfing last summer after being pile driven into the sand headfirst by a three-foot wave. I ended up fracturing my C6 and C7 vertebra and was operated on five months ago. My C5 – C7 vertebras are attached together by two rods and six screws and bone fusion was also done. I have permanently lost some flexibility in my neck and still have minor pain in that area, occasionally.

How do I get the same fun and excitement back from surfing prior to my accident?

Thanks,
D.G.

Surfing is our passion, our lifestyle, and we plan our lives to the beat of the next arriving swell (much to the displeasure of many of those around us). As athletes, we know that surfing is an extreme physically demanding activity that requires great health and continuous dedication to water time and/or land based training to even participate at a moderate level when the waves are pumping.

Back Pain and Posture – Inextricably Linked

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

One of the most common denominators among those who suffer from chronic back and neck pain — poor posture. The postures (sitting, sleeping and standing) that you live in most frequently – whether at work or at school, at home on the computer or on the couch – together with the quality of the movement patterns you repeat every day (brushing your teeth, getting in your car, working out, etc.) dictate how gravity effects the body you are creating.

The Importance of Maintaining the Head’s Neutral Anatomical Position

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

“It’s an axiom… the body follows the head. And your head held in a forward position can pull your entire body out of line.”

So says Rene Cailliet, Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California, and he couldn’t be more right.

More importantly, Cailliet goes on to explain the ramifications of a body out of line, or worse, one that stays in a hunched, rigid position. Among the ramifications:

• Vital lung capacity is reduced by as much as 30%
• The gastrointestinal system, particularly the large intestine, is adversely affected
• Endorphin production is reduced
• Back and neck pain and discomfort increases

So, how do we fight back?

Losing 20 lbs in Less Than 10 Seconds… It’s All In Your Head!

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Through his groundbreaking research, Nobel Prize laureate Roger Wolcott Sperry demonstrated that approximately 90% of our brain energy is used to help our body manage gravity.

90%! And given the way we live today that number might even be higher.

This brain energy (and the correlated physical effort) has become known as the “righting reflex” – and imagine all we could accomplish if gravity weren’t such an issue…
